One of the great things about publishing this blog is being able to take spotlight issues that face everyday New Yorkers and offer solutions that can make their lives a little easier. This past year, we saw utility costs rise, and prices at the pump rise even higher. On the upside, bottlenecks in the supply chain eased substantially, giving contractors and homeowners materials they need for home improvements. We covered it all each month, and we hope you were paying attention because school is now in session!

We’ve got five questions covering some of our favorite blog posts from the past year. Score yourself at the end of this quiz.

As we bid farewell to 2022, it’s time to put your electrical knowledge to the test with our Year in Review Quiz. From ceiling fan installation services to lighting installation services, residential electrical repair to emergency electrician services, PK Electric NYC has been your trusted partner throughout the year. Our team of certified electricians has been dedicated to providing top-notch commercial electrician services, ensuring your safety and satisfaction. Join us in reflecting on the significant electrical milestones of the past year and see how well you remember them. Take our quiz and challenge yourself to become an electrical aficionado!

QUESTION ONE

When should you get a ‘health check’ on your home’s electrical system?

A – When your insurance company requires it

B – After a DIY job

C – When you have storm damage

D – Before you plan to have a renovation.

E – All of the above.

If you chose E, you’re right! Or you’re mostly right. Regardless the age of your building, the general rule of thumb is to have an inspection of your electrical system every three to five years.

QUESTION TWO

If you have low ceilings and want to create the illusion of more space, what kind of lighting will help?

A – Torchiere floor lamps

B – Track lighting

C – Recessed lights

D – Fluorescents

If you chose C, you’re right. As we covered in our February post, recessed lights are great for spaces that may not have a lot of clearance. If you have low ceilings, they make your spaces appear bigger.

QUESTION THREE

True or False. Considering that charging a car uses your own home’s electricity, is it more expensive to operate an electric vehicle?

A – True, Electricity is expensive!

B – False, Gas is a rip-off!

If you chose false, you’re absolutely correct! Back in March, we cited a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy on electric car owners’ charging habits that found that most pay an average of 15 cents per kilowatt-hour to charge the battery. That means it costs roughly 5 cents to drive one mile or $13 a week in an electric vehicle.

QUESTION FOUR

As we covered in our post about smart thermostats, there’s no debate over whether a smart thermostat can save you money. They can switch to fan mode to reduce air conditioning costs. Their apps can remind you when to replace your furnace or AC filter. And their learning capabilities can only heat your home–or parts of your home–when you’re most likely be present. What other surprising function can they do?

A – Feed your pets.

B – Help dehumidify your home

C – Remind you when to buy milk

D – Play music

If you guessed C, you’re right! Your smart thermostat can also run your AC longer in the warmer months to help get rid of excess moisture, so you don’t need to run a dehumidifier.

QUESTION FIVE

In our sequel post about seven additional habits of energy savers, we mentioned a tip for saving energy costs when running the dishwasher. Was it:

A – Skip the pre-wash and load your washer with filthy plates

B – Do half-loads.

C – Pack your dishwasher to the brim. Running once is cheaper.

D – Double the detergent.

Good news for people who hate pre-washing. A is correct! Pre-washing your dishes before putting them in a dishwasher that was designed by name to wash dishes, is a waste of time, water, and energy (to heat the water in your sink). Scrape off the big scraps of food and let your dishwasher do its job.

SCORE TIME!

So, how did you do?

  • If you got all five correct, congratulations! You should audition for Jeopardy!
  • If you got four correct, celebrate! You’re a solid student.
  • If you got three correct, relax. You passed.
  • If you got only one or two correct, don’t beat yourself up. You can always read our archived blog posts here!
