Happy 2023! It’s the middle of the month, and if you’re like a lot of people, you probably already gave up on your new year’s resolution. That’s because so many improvement goals are centered around giving up old things rather than embracing new things.

In an interview with The Today Show this past December, psychologist Nathan Brandon suggested “Pick something that resonates with you and aligns with your values…” So, if your values involve doing your part for a cleaner planet, 2023 might be the year that you want to put those values to work by investing in new technologies for your life and home. After all, it’s never too late. Why wait a year for a redo on your new year’s resolution when you can take steps for improvement today?

Looking to make a positive impact on the environment this year? Start by focusing on energy-saving solutions for your home or business. Get an Electric Vehicle

With the passage last year of The CHIPS Act, supply chain issues and dependency on China for manufacturing of vital technologies for electric vehicle production, will soon be in the proverbial rearview mirror. But there was more good news for aspiring electric car owners in 2022. In November, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that removed barriers to the installation of electric vehicle charging stations on private property. This effectively told homeowners’ associations that they couldn’t enact policies prohibiting homeowners from installing charging stations on their private property.

And there’s better news coming in the future. According to an October blog post by national space agency NASA, a technology called “subcooled flow boiling” could boost the amount of electrical current 150-amp EV chargers by roughly 1,400 amps, nearly five times the rate of up to 520 amps currently supplied to EVs. This could cut the charging times of electric vehicles to five minutes or less.

Three Reasons to Heat Your Home from the Floor Up

Very rarely do luxury and Eco friendliness go hand-in-hand. That is unless you’ve ditched radiators for radiant warmth from a heated floor. There’s like experiencing the luxury of stepping onto a heated floor after getting out of a shower or having your morning coffee barefoot in February. From reducing your overall carbon footprint to gaining some additional floor space, here are three reasons to consider electric floor radiant heating as one of your 2023 new year’s resolutions.

Improved Air Quality: Some traditional heating systems circulate heat through ventilation systems which can gather mold and pollen. And baseboard radiators are dust magnets. With radiant heating, there are no allergens being pushed from room to room.

Increased Floor Space: Old fashioned radiators, baseboard heaters and forced air ducts take up valuable floor space and–in some cases–can dictate where you place your furniture and appliances. With radiant floors, you’ll gain space and have more design options.

Lower Energy Costs: Radiant floors provide consistent heat without any chilly pockets or warm and cold cycles. Most people who have heated floors installed find that they’re spending less in their monthly heating bills.

Boost Your Smart Home’s IQ

From smart thermostats to smart outlets and smart lighting, smart homes systems were designed with convenience and energy efficiency in mind. But there are a bevy of smart home appliances and features in all price ranges that can help you do your part in decreasing your home’s carbon footprint. Here are a few.

Smart Sprinklers: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that households with built-in sprinkler waste nearly 25,000 gallons of water each year. Smart sprinklers have sensors that analyze soil and weather conditions. Unlike scheduled devices that will go off every day at the same time, smart sprinklers only operate when they’re needed. So, if you just had a heavy rain and your lawn is moist, your sprinkler will use less water.

Smart Power Strips: A power strip with multiple chargers plugged into it will continue to drain phantom power long after the devices are fully charged. Smart power strips stop charging automatically, even if the device is plugged in. When not in use, the power strip can even shut itself down.

Smart Meters: Traditional electric meters record energy consumption on utility devices. But smart meters give data on real-time electricity consumption at short intervals. Smart meters have a two-way connection between the meter and the central electronic system of your home providing you measurement that is accurate, automated and requires minimal human interference.
