An Energy-Saving Sequel

Two years ago, during the darkest days of the pandemic, while everyone was sheltering in place and using more electricity than usual, we published our blog post “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Energy Savers.” In it, we suggested using cold water in your washing machine, throwing a towel in your dryer, skipping the heat cycle in your dishwasher, cleaning the fridge, using your microwave more, putting chargers on a power strip, and dusting off your lightbulbs.

Among the nuggets of wisdom in that post was one spot-on prediction. We noted that “utility giant Con Edison had stopped shutoffs and was waiving late payment charges.” We also predicted that “they’re eventually going to want their money.” Were we ever right! Have you seen your electric bill lately?!

A report in The City reported that in New York, electricity cost $0.256 per kilowatt-hour in January 2022, a 20% increase from the previous January. Ouch! In the spirit of that pain, we’re publishing a sequel to our post from 2020.

Seven MORE Habits of Highly Effective Energy Savers

  1. Explore Your Smart Home Features – Smart plugs, smart lights, and especially smart thermostats are more than just fun space-age gadgets that you can talk to. They can save you a lot of money. According to Energy.gov, programming your thermostat to drop seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day (presumably when you’re at work) can help save 10% on your electric bill each year.
  1. Maximize Your Dryer Heat with Back-to-Back Loads – Here’s a tip from the Department of Energy. Do as much of your laundry on the same day and switch your loads while the dryer is still warm. This allows you to use the remaining heat inside the dryer for the next cycle. Also, a dryer ball (which you can purchase on Amazon for $1.75) can cut drying time by allowing more air to get around your clothes during the cycle.
  1. Run Full Dishwasher Loads Without Pre-Washing – Pre-washing your dishes before putting them in a dishwasher that was designed by name to wash dishes, is a waste of time, water, and energy (to heat the water in your sink). Scrape off the big scraps of food and let your dishwasher do its job. And only run it once a week. You’re not made of money!
  1. Keep Your Freezer Full – Outside of energy prices, do you know what else has gotten steeper? Food. A U.S. Department of Agriculture report on Livestock and Poultry Outlook cited a price jump from 83 to 98 cents per pound for turkeys. Having a full freezer helps insulate the whole appliance and save on electricity. Guess what takes up a lot of space in freezers? Turkeys. A cheaper turkey today will save you money tomorrow.
  1. Exorcize Phantoms – In January of 2021, we devoted an entire blog post to phantom power–also known as leaking energy, ghost load, and vampire draw. These little bits of power used for chargers, household appliances, computers, TVs, and clocks draw power all day while basically doing nothing and costing you up to $30 a month. Re-read this blog post. Follow the advice. You’ll thank us.
  1. Replace Your HVAC Filters – If you think your electric bills were high in January, can you imagine what they’ll be this summer when you’re running your air conditioning? Swapping out the filters in your HVAC system not only extends the life of your equipment in the long term, but also makes them run more efficiently, saving you money in the short term.
  2. Research Incentives – Here’s a shocker. Con Edison may be able to save you money. If you’re a homeowner, landlord or contractor, you may be eligible for a rebate from the same company that you swear is gouging you. Research your options here!
