Is 2022 the Year You Break Up with Gas and Take Up with an Electric Car?

New York City and especially Manhattan has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to trends in fashion, food, and entertainment. It’s one of the things that we best like about living here. However, to the dismay of local drivers, one business in Hell’s Kitchen is way ahead of the unfortunate trend of rising gasoline prices.

While the rest of the nation is grappling with gas prices that have exceeded $4 per gallon, the Mobil station on 11th Avenue at 51st Street has been charging that much (and then some) for over a year. According to a Google search, as of this writing they’re charging $6 for a gallon of midgrade and $6.49 for premium. And with ongoing supply chain issues and an escalating conflict in Europe, this trend does not appear to be reversing anytime soon.

Before we do the math, you may want to pour yourself a drink.

According to AAA, the average price of gasoline in Manhattan is currently $4.80 . The average American drives 260 miles a week. The average car gets about 25 miles per gallon. That’s $49.92 a week, or roughly $200 a month on fuel.

Ouch.

DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ

Is it cheaper to drive an electric car? Naysayers may point to a recent piece by Fox Business that claims that operating a gasoline-powered is cheaper than driving an electric car, but data cited by that piece is based upon rates charged by commercial Level 3 super-chargers. Because most electric car drivers charge at home or in public parking lots/garages using Level 1 or 2 charging equipment, actual costs are substantially cheaper. A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy on electric car owners’ charging habits found that most pay an average of 15 cents per kilowatt-hour to charge the battery. That means it costs roughly 5 cents to drive one mile or $13 a week in an electric vehicle.

STILL NOT CONVINCED?

The U.S. Department of Energy’s alternative fuel data center tracks electricity laws and incentives in all 50 states. Below are highlights of savings programs for New Yorkers.

·      Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Rebate
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Charge Ready NY program offers rebates for public and private entities toward the purchase and installation of Level 2 EVSE at public parking facilities, workplaces, and multi-unit dwellings. Rebates are available for $4,000 per port. Disadvantaged communities may receive an additional rebate of $500 per Level 2 EVSE port. For more information, including application guidelines, see the NYSERDA Charge Ready NY website.

·      Electric Vehicle Emissions Inspection Exemption
Vehicles powered exclusively by electricity are exempt from state motor vehicle emissions inspections. For more information, see the New York Vehicle Inspection Program (NYVIP2) website.

For more information, including application guidelines, see the NYSERDA Charge Ready NYwebsite.

·      Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Rebate Program
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provides rebates of up to $2,000 for the purchase or lease of a new eligible PEV. Rebate amounts vary based on a vehicle’s all-electric range and manufacturer’s suggested retail price. For more information, see NYSERDA’s Drive Clean Rebate website.
