In Shakespeare’s famed “All the World’s a Stage” speech from his comedy As You Like It, the playwright/poet makes special mention of the lover, “sighing like a furnace, with a woeful ballad.” So, with Valentine’s Day upon us, it seems only logical to take a cue from the Bard and consult theatrical professionals to determine what kind of lighting best sets the mood for romance.

According to the lighting experts who write the blog, color is the key to creating the mood or directing the emotion of any scene, especially romance. Intensity is equally important. “Loud lighting does not set the mood for romance,” the experts say.

“Instead, set the light at 35-40% … ”they suggest.

Similarly, lighting guru Don Peifer (the illumination brainpower behind some of Annie Leibovitz’ photo shoots and J.Lo and Madonna’s music videos) weighed in on the secrets to creating that “golden hour” look in any home. In a piece for Vogue, he suggests, in part, the following:

Buy the Right Bulbs – Read the packaging and buy lightbulbs with a color accuracy rating of 90 or higher, and color temperature of around 2700K for warm. Avoid fluorescents.

Stage Your Fixtures – Don’t just go for one lighting source like an overheard. Vary your light sources with a combination of shaded floor and table lamps, pendant or desk lamps, sconces and recessed lighting.

Light the Room’s Architecture – Place fixtures behind furniture or plants and bounce the light off your walls. This cuts down on glare and transforms your walls from “unseen backdrops into canvases.”

Set Levels – Basic on/off lighting switches have no options for nuance. Dimmers on overhead, wall-mounted, floor and table lights give added romance and atmosphere.

A great way to get the most out of your lighting scheme is to invest in a smart dimmer system. A scalable wireless smart lighting system like Caséta by Lutron, can preset lights in the room for any mood and a time that you schedule. It works with a voice assistant like Google, Siri, or Alexa, or at the touch of your hands anywhere in the room on a smartphone app.

According to the home design experts at who surveyed 1500 homeowners on the subject of bedroom renovation and décor, after calming and cozy, intimate or romantic is the third-most desired atmosphere for a master bedroom. A surefire way to achieve a romantic feeling is by choosing the correct color to set the mood.

Here’s a fun fact. Did you know that caramel (the color, not the confection) is a proven aphrodisiac? A 2013 study involving 2,000 people found a strong connection between bedroom wall color and the amount of sleep and sex that happened within those four walls. And the best color for sex, according to the respondents was caramel. That’s right. If you want a good night’s sleep, go for ice blue. But if you want a little motivation to get busy at night, caramel is your color. The study found that couples with a caramel décor scheme were intimate, on average, three times per week.

One super-flexible way to play with a variety of colors that will transform the mood of your room is to take a cue from Don Peifer’s first tip for Vogue and buy the right bulb. And in today’s market, no home lighting tool more flexible in both intensity and color than a smart bulb.

There are a variety of smart lightbulbs on the market today, each one compatible with a variety of smart home hubs like Google Assistant, Amazon, and Apple HomeKit. One extremely versatile product out today is the ilumi Bluetooth Smart LED A19 Lightbulb. Used individually or as part of a grouping, these bulbs can change color and intensity from your phone or tablet. Best of all, they come with amazing built-in lighting programs to achieve the perfect light for any mood.

Remember that while all lightbulbs basically look alike and screw in the same way, not every legacy dimmer system will work well with all LED, halogen, or incandescent bulbs. Know your dimmer before you invest in smart bulbs.
